To become a firefighter in Texas you complete a fire academy approved by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP), pass the state certification exam, and get hired by a department. TPSTA's Structural Firefighter Academy is that first and biggest step. Tuition is $3,000, the training is hands-on and in person at our Bastrop campus, and it prepares you for TCFP Basic Structure Firefighter certification with IFSAC and Pro-Board accredited seals that transfer across state lines.
A structural firefighter is trained to fight fires in buildings - homes, businesses, apartments - and to handle the rescues, hazardous conditions, and medical calls that come with them. This is a demanding, physical, disciplined trade, and the academy is where you learn to do it safely under real conditions, including live fire.

What you'll learn
The academy follows the TCFP Basic Structure Firefighter curriculum, which is built on the NFPA 1001 professional standard. You start with the foundations and build to the coordinated fireground skills a department expects on day one.
- Fire behavior, building construction, and how fire moves through a structure
- Personal protective equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
- Hose handling, water supply, nozzles, and fire streams
- Forcible entry, ventilation, search and rescue, and ladders
- Live-fire evolutions under instructor control
- Firefighter safety, survival, and rapid intervention
Requirements to enroll
You must be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or GED. Firefighting is physically demanding, so you need to be in sound physical condition and able to work in heat, in heavy gear, and under stress. Departments run background checks and physical exams as part of hiring, so a clean record and good fitness set you up to be hired the moment you certify.
Certification and accreditation
The academy prepares you for the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Basic Structure Firefighter certification, which is the credential a paid Texas fire department requires. On top of the state cert, our program carries IFSAC and Pro-Board accreditation. Those two seals are recognized nationally and internationally, so your certification travels if you ever leave Texas.
Cost
Tuition is $3,000, which is a fraction of what a college fire academy costs. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit we keep the price down so that money is never the reason a qualified Texan cannot enter the fire service. Plan separately for the TCFP exam and certification fees and any personal gear the program does not supply.

What you can do after
With a TCFP certification you can be hired as a structural firefighter by municipal and rural departments across Texas. From there the fire service ladders into driver/operator, fire instructor, fire inspector, and officer roles - all pathways we also train. Adding an EMT certification, which most departments want, makes you far more hireable.
